This week MIFF (Melbourne International Film Festival) has hit the town with a barrage of good films littering our independent cinemas. First in my ‘to-see’ list was Rubber, a film directed by, edited by, scored by Quentin Dupieux aka Mr Oizo.
Rubber, in a single sentence, is the story of a killer tyre that ‘rolls’ (excuse the pun) in to a small mid-west town of America . The structure and cinematography, as we have witnessed and come to expect from the music of Mr Oizo, is extremely well planned chaos. Beautiful low vantage point shots of the tyre really made it feel alive, and helped you relate to the bizarre workings of the Dupieux mind. (also reminded me the Flat Eric we’ve seen over the years)
Along with creating a beautiful and bizarre film, Mr Oizo partnered up with Gaspard Augé (Justice) to produce the OST.
Crystal Castles have been remixed ALOT. Here is another one of ‘Vietnam’ by Chicago’s Midnight Conspiracy. At first i went into this a little hesitant thinking ooh yeah it’s another Crystal Castles remix. But much to my surprise the guys have stripped back the vocals and distortion which Crystal Castles are famous for and producing this more melodic little gem. Whilst still keeping the those original Crystal Castles features we have all grown to love.
It’s one more week already. The wait is almost over. Remember that morning you were sitting at your computer, multiple windows open. 8:50am. Refresh, refresh, refresh waiting for the clock to tick over to 9 moshtix website loaded and ready to go. Ready to get your hands on those hot little tickets. Then once it al goes through, the sigh of relief. Calling friends trying to work out who else is going, how your getting there and who’s got the tent.
Well guys, the next thing to do is jump in your car and start driving or jump on the plane and make your way to WOODFORD! So whichever way you plan to get there here are a few tunes for your trip.
STROBE have a short but busy history in Melbourne, throwing some really good fucking parties.
They’ve brought us Proxy, Zombie Disco Squad, Jesse Rose, Feadz and Boy 8-Bit. This time round, it was national favourites, Bag Raiders and Beni .
Hosted at Prince (one of my long standing favourite homes away from home), the night was good? To be honest, i was too drunk for a real ‘review’ but in my opinion, that’s rad.
Congratulations to Jesse who won the double pass.
Unfortunate, our camera ran short on the night so we have borrowed some from fellow man of the night John Dang.
Cut Impala have released a new single… I mean Tame Copy.
Start over…
Cut Copy have released a new single.
Heavily inspired by the trendy new ‘post-modern 60′s brit-pop‘ the song could very well be a Tame Impala B-Side. It has every cliche imaginable, Multi-layered vocal harmonies, synthesized organs, hand claps and even a very camp ‘Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Wooh!’ chant.
Other than the change that we have seen from a proven Cut Copy formula, the song has some strong aspects. The vocal bridge heavily filtered through flanger and reverb did remind me of the better parts of the new Midnight Juggernaut album, I’m just not sure if this song has got me craving a new Cut Copy Album.
In preparation for the release of their record – The Bridge (due out any moment now) DLRN have decided to share a couple of tracks. The eight track release features some of the biggest names in what they do, like Prometheus Brown (of the Blue Scholars), Illecism and Iman Malika and Hopie Spitshard just to name a few.
Give up the tennis career you have spent soo many early mornings training for. Start a band. Write some songs .Record an album and get the girl. Sounds like a master plan that only two guys from Paris can think up and execute. They are Housse De Racket. An indie duo with big plans. Following the footsteps of other massive French acts like Air, Daft Punk and Pheonix, Housse De Racket will soon be just another household name.
Their 7” of Forty Love is due out in August which you can pre-order here OR you can download it digitally now from here.
Here are a couple of remixes from their hit single ‘Oh Yeah!’
Over the years Sweden has produced many little treats, Ikea being one of them. This time they have popped out David Borkmann. His latest ep, ‘Mercury’ has been out for a couple of weeks now but thought you should check it out anyway. The ep holds a minimalist feel but still keeping hints of house underneath. Check it out, and if you like it as much as I do pick it up here.
It was about a month ago The Chemical Brothers finally released album 10, Further.
In a word, its epic.
Every song just builds, and builds, becoming almost larger than life.
By the end of the record i was thoroughly exhausted.
When Swoon first came on the radio, i could tell Chemical Brothers were back with something big, and for those who are yet to really take this album in, well i guess, do something about it.
I heard in an interview that NO samples were used through-out the production of the album, as that was the only rule for the duo.
Anyway, i got my hands on the Swoon CDS with remixes by Boys Noize and Lindstrom & Prins Thomas, and the L&PT remix really does continue along with the overall vibe of album and was a stand-out to me.
