Remember Splendor: Part Two – Bag Raiders

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Remember Splendour is our bi-weekly reviews of the Festival that was Splendour In The Grass 2010. Each post will be reviews and memories of bands that played, things we did and the adventure we had.

Oddly, Bag Raiders opted to play between Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem rather than have their own dedicated set. It’s a shame because the DJ’s they get to fill in between bands get lost on the crowd. Their newest single Way Back Home has just been premiered on Festival supporters JJJ, and it really gives their new album much promise.

Time To Wander

Monday, June 21st, 2010

A couple of weeks back I mentioned Gypse and the Cat in our little Road To Splendour ‘segment’. The time has now come (well tomorrow) for the release of ‘Time to Wander’ . We thought we would have  a bit of a chat with the guys, about the release, living it up in the U.K and Splendour in the Grass. Here is what they said..

Hey guys we (c.s.t) though lets start from the beginning, for the people who might not have heard of Gyps and the Cat at all… So who are you and where do you come from?

We are Xavier Bacash and Lionel Towers from Melbourne Australia. Originally french house/electro DJ’s at some of the same nightclubs where we were introduced by a mutual friend. We started a friendship and shared some musical ideas, after which we began a writing partnership and the rest is history.

Why the name ‘Gyspy and the Cat’?

Xavier had a bedtime story book which he bought from an antique store which we were flicking through for ideas. Eventually we came across a story called ‘Gypsy The Cat’ which sounded like an interesting song title. We didn’t have a band name at the time and thought that we added an “&”, it would be a great band name and would suit the whole aesthetic of what we were creating musically and lyrically.

So you submitted a few tracks for Triple J’s unearthed.. How did you find this helped Gypsy and the Cat?

Triple J has been massive in getting our music out there. We have had lots of friends who tell us that they hear a song of ours getting played on Triple J. it is an Incredible idea that new bands get played right alongside their favourite acts and then broadcast all over an entire country like that. Government money well spent we figure!

How hard was it to pack up and head abroad?

It’s always hard leaving family and friends but it was exciting at the same time. We busy working on making music, putting the band together and we can to explore a new city at the same time.

Do you come back and visit Melbourne often?

We’ve only been in the UK for a few months so we haven’t had time to go back as of yet but we will be back a few times before the year is out to play some shows.  We are there with the Foals in July and then our own show at the Toff in August.

Where do you see Gypsy and the Cat heading?

We just going to write and play and let the music charts its path. We definitely write music for people to hear and enjoy it.

Splendour in the grass is coming up quick… Did you ever expect to play such a big festival on home soil?

When we wrote the album playing festivals and shows was the farthest thing on our mind because we were interested mainly in writing music that we liked and that’s it. But as more and more opportunities came our way we started entertaining the idea of playing festivals and to think that Splendour in the grass would be our first ever Australian festival show was something that we never thought would be the case. It’s remarkable how these things happen and we’re very excited to play there.

What would be your dream lineup for Splendour you could play along side…? Even though this one is massive already.

The lineup is fantastic and we could not ask for anything better really. I suppose it would be nice if there were some supergroups ie ‘U2′ and ‘Radiohead’ to name a minute few but I guess it may ruin the pop indie vibe that a festival like Splendour do so well.

Plug the release.. Tell us about time to wander. What’s the story?

Time to Wander is a song that was written just before Xavier went to India and is about breaking free and going on a journey of solitude and self discovery. Musically, it’s quite an uptempo track though is laced with emotive melodies and chords. Like most our music, it’s a juxtaposition between electronic elements and rock elements and to any listener it can draw upon many emotions, whether it’s happiness or sadness, or even both!

It comes out on Young and Lost June 21st (limited 300 vinyl release) and we have a video online that features the brilliant Art Malik playing the feature role as a guru who orchestrates a whole heap of random people with silver boxes on their heads to come together and in essence, ‘break free’.

Review: Grum – Heartbeats LP

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Heartbeats‘ is Grums debut record, but that being said he has had much success in the past few years leading up to this release. Recently his remixes of Jump Jump Dance Dance and The Priors have stood out above the rest, and in my opinion he has really found his sound.

This record doesn’t have any weak spots, no one song sticks out as being rushed or unfinished and it sounds like Grum wrote the album he wanted. Due to his recent success, i was expecting this record to have been tailored more to fit a particular market. Instead it reminds me of soundtracks composed by Brad Fiedel or even John Carpenter.

Special mention for sampling Don Johnson‘s Heartbeat.

Overall this album is worth tracking down. I can’t wait to hear remixes/re-edits of some of the darker songs!

Review: Kitsuné Maison 9

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Kitsuné would have to be known for putting together some of the hottest compilations. The latest just about to be released is Kitsuné Maison 9 - Out April 26th. The eighteen long comp brings a wide selection of artists and remixes, from Two Door Cinema Club to Holy Ghost! Particular mention to the new Crookers track ‘Cooleur Couleur‘ featuring french pop icon Yelle, which sounds nothing like the Crookers we know of 2009 but has a really fresh funky vibe and Jamiaca’s track ‘Short & Entertaining‘ which has solidified them as band of 2010 to watch. Be sure to pick up the full compilation here. Here are musics.
